Driving smart advertising for 850M+ monthly users on MGID: My impact from a Product designer’s perspective

Designing for impact: Balancing business goals and user needs on MGID with end-to-end design solutions

In this case study, I showcase my work on enhancing the MGID platform by designing features tailored to the unique needs of both Advertisers and Publishers user archetypes. I focused on creating solutions that optimized campaign management, ad performance tracking, and new native ad formats.

Through a combination of user research, data analysis, and iterative design, I delivered solutions that balanced business goals with user needs, driving higher engagement, improved revenue, and a more intuitive platform experience for all stakeholders.

MGID: the perfect blend between branding & performance

The MGID platform empowers publishers to maximize revenue and build engaged audiences while helping brands boost performance and awareness. It's all about seamlessly connecting them with the right audience at the right moment through the right content. The AI-based matching algorithm connects users to products, showing ads and relevant content only.

The service connects advertisers and publishers through its native advertising platform, creating a seamless ecosystem where both parties benefit. This is how it works:

Advertisers
  • Targeted ad placements (native ads reach the right audience)
  • AI-driven matching (algorithms deliver ads based on user behavior and interests)
  • Optimized performance (real-time analytics boost ROI, conversions, engagement)
Publishers
  • Monetization solutions (publishers earn by integrating native ads into content)
  • Quality control (only relevant, high-quality ads appear, ensuring trust)
  • Audience engagement (ads match user interests, boosting retention and revenue)
Connection
  • Real-time bidding (advertisers bid for placements, ensuring competitive pricing)
  • Native ad personalization (ads blend seamlessly with site content)
  • Cross-platform compatibility (ads adapt across devices for a smooth user experience)

By applying user research, data-driven insights, and iterative design processes, I contributed to creating impactful solutions that benefited both Advertisers and Publishers, developing features for MGID’s ad management dashboard and creating new native ad widgets to optimize engagement, performance, and user experience.

Optimizing the Advertiser experience: scalable & data-driven solutions

I designed advertiser-focused features to improve campaign management, ad performance tracking, and targeting precision. My goal was to create a seamless, data-driven experience that enabled advertisers to launch, optimize, and scale campaigns efficiently while making data-backed decision-making intuitive and accessible.

In parallel, I provided ongoing support for MGID’s complex design systems, ensuring consistency and scalability across all products and sub-products. This involved developing and maintaining a comprehensive design framework that streamlined workflows, reduced design inconsistencies, and improved collaboration between design and development teams. The system was designed to be flexible, supporting the evolving needs of the platform while maintaining a cohesive user experience.

I designed the following features:

Campaigns management

Designing the campaign management dashboard

My team and I continuously worked on enhancing and updating the campaign management dashboard. The dashboard integrates real-time performance analytics, budget tracking, and targeting controls, allowing advertisers to optimize campaigns effortlessly.

My contributions included extended smart filtering options design, bulk actions for campaign management, CPC changes functionality, budget tracking and management, etc.

Campaign setup

Tracking methods management updates

This feature allows advertisers to seamlessly integrate tracking options (UTM parameters, third-party tracking pixels, and conversion tracking integrations), ensuring accurate data collection for measuring ad performance with real-time insights.

Through user research and iterative design, I refined the tracking setup process to minimize complexity, reduce errors, and improve overall campaign analytics, empowering advertisers to maximize their ROI.

Campaign setup

Enhancing tracking with Native integrations

This enhancement in the campaign setup process allows advertisers to connect third-party analytics tools (such as Yampi, Voluum, etc.) without complex manual configurations.

By incorporating pre-configured integrations, advertisers can easily select and enable tracking methods that align with their campaign goals, ensuring consistent data flow and real-time performance monitoring.

Source management

Transparency & Blocklist functionality

I designed the Transparency feature to give advertisers greater control over ad spend, enabling dynamic bid adjustments based on audience segments, placements, geographies, and device types.

To further enhance control, I also designed the Blocklist feature, allowing advertisers to exclude unwanted websites, placements, or traffic sources that don’t align with their campaign goals to ensure brand safety, better targeting precision, and better ROI.

Designing 60+ new native ad widget formats: Enhancing monetization & engagement

In addition to advertiser-focused solutions, I designed publisher-centric features to enhance monetization, ad placement control, and user engagement within the MGID platform. To support publishers in making data-driven decisions, I contributed to the development of real-time analytics dashboards.

As part of my work on publisher-focused features, I led the design of 60+ new native ad widget formats, optimizing how ads integrate within publisher content while maintaining a seamless user experience (including concept development for premium publishers). My goal was to create flexible, high-performing ad units that balance monetization, visibility, and engagement without disrupting the content flow or user retention.

Approach & research

To ensure the effectiveness of the new ad widgets, I combined behavioral research with performance analytics, leveraging both qualitative insights and quantitative data:

  • Analyzed heatmaps and session recordings to understand how users interact with native ads and how placement impacts engagement
  • Prepared designs for A/B tests comparing different new widget design versions or new formats against existing ones to measure CTR, viewability, and engagement rates
  • Used real-time analytics to track revenue impact, ensuring new widget designs contributed to higher eCPM
  • Collaborated with the sales and account management teams to gather direct feedback from publishers regarding customization needs and monetization goals.

Design Process

To support the scalability, consistency, and efficiency of MGID’s native ad widgets, I designed a comprehensive widget design system from scratch. This system provided a unified framework that streamlined the creation, customization, and implementation of native ad formats across diverse publisher platforms.

Through iterative testing and continuous optimization, I successfully designed 60+ high-performing native ad widgets:

New ad widgets design

Smart widgets

My focus was on designing innovative layouts for Smart Widgets to reduce ad blindness and improve user engagement.

These widgets use AI-driven algorithms to deliver personalized ad recommendations, optimizing CTR and overall ad performance.

This all-in-one customizable solution helps publishers reach their monetization, users acquisition and retention goals.

New ad widgets design

Under-article & in-article widgets

These formats are designed to blend seamlessly with the page layout while maximizing user engagement and monetization opportunities.

It's a non-intrusive placement – ads appear right after users finish reading, making them more receptive to engaging with sponsored content.

Inherently, native ad units can also be used with internal exchange.

New ad widgets design

Additional widget formats

I designed various widget layouts, including header banners, sidebar banners, pop-ups, notifications, and sticky banners, to identify the most effective solutions for driving user engagement.

These new ad formats not only helped differentiate us from competitors but also enhanced monetization opportunities for publishers by increasing ad visibility, CTR, and overall revenue for both ours and client's sides.

Lessons learned

Reflecting on this project, designing features for both advertisers and publishers on the MGID platform was a complex yet rewarding challenge. Balancing the needs of two distinct user groups while aligning with business goals required a deep understanding of user behavior, platform capabilities, and industry trends.

Given the chance to revisit this project, I would explore advanced personalization features to offer advertisers and publishers more tailored solutions built around their jobs-to-be-done.
